Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, which is under the direct jurisdiction of central Moscow. An explosion and fire released a large amount of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, spread across many of the Soviet Union and Western Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power accident in history, and is one of only two events were classified as level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other is the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster).
